Funny I was just thinking about the gay marriage issue this morning. How my view on it is never expressed and then I remembered "Oh yeah it was once!" I used to do a cable access show called "Women's News Hour" and one time we had a guest on to talk about gay marriage. I was in the booth while my mentor did the interview and she really cornered this lady, saying, "well, the producer says she thinks the state has no place in deciding who is and isn't family and that rather than legalizing gay marriage the state should get out of the marriage game altogether. How do you respond to that view?" And I felt so bad for this poor woman, who had responses ready for any right-wing bullshit thrown her way, but was obviously unprepared to debate anarchists. Oops. But it got said. On TV. So that was good. And I still feel that way. If the gummint is going to be involved in marriage at all, maybe it could be a commitment to raise a child, or a commitment to be family with another person or other people regardless of any kind of sexual relationships. If people want a recognition of their sexual relationships then they can get it from their religion or their cultural group. I really think it's fucked that the state gives special protection to het couples. We have it pretty sweet already, thank you.
